About the PCAT:
The PCAT is a specialized, standardized test used to identify competent applicants for pharmacy institutions and institutes. It assesses overall academic skills and scientific understanding required for the start of pharmaceutical education. The PCAT is designed exclusively for pharmacy colleges and is broken into portions, or subtests, that are timed individually. You will be able to work on just one component of each subtest during the time allotted. You will not be able to return to older subtests or proceed to subsequent ones. As you work through each part, you may find it helpful to start with the questions that are simple for you, then move on to the questions that will require more thought.
Subtests:
There are five separate subtests on the PCAT:
- Writing: The subtest includes a provocation about health, science, or a social, cultural, or political topic. Examinees are expected to give a solution to the problem in their original essay and are graded based on how effectively they produce an essay that is long enough to fully describe the answer.
- Biological Processes: Items are offered either in a set that goes with a brief paragraph or as stand-alone questions that can be answered on their own.
- Chemical Processes: Items are provided in the same format as the Biological subtest.
- Critical Reading: All things come in sets to accompany reading passages.
- Quantitative Reasoning: The subtest is completely made up of freestanding items, many of which are given in the form of word problems or problem-solving scenarios.
Experimental Items:
The version of the PCAT you take may have experimental multiple-choice items embedded inside the subtests, or it may include a distinct section for experimental items. The experimental items are being evaluated for future use on PCAT test forms and will have no impact on your score. You will not know which things are experimental and which count toward your score, so you must do well on all of the test’s items and sections.
